BFAR distributes P5M fisheries equipment

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Central Luzon distributed last March 31 fisheries livelihood equipment worth P5 million to Bataan fishermen.

In its statement, the BFAR said the fisheries livelihood intervention aims to uplift and elevate the livelihood of fishery stakeholders in the province of Bataan through the distribution of fishery equipment such as fishing boats, fishing gears, aquaculture supplies; inputs assistance, and post-harvest equipment.

The BFAR said the fiberglass reinforced plastic boats for instance, supports fisherfolks through the replacement of old dilapidated wooden boats.

“These items are environment friendly, as the use of plastic materials will reduce the use of wood and are more durable, disaster resilient and climate proof thereby ensuring the safety of fishermen at sea,” the BFAR reasoned.

The aim of marine engine distribution to fisher folk community is to immediately rehabilitate existing and old fishing boats to achieve better harvest, added the BFAR.

According to BFAR, one of the major problems of the milkfish fry gatherers is due to the influx of cheaper Indonesian fry in the country, most of the wild fry caught are left unsold.

Thus a need for Wild Fry Facility which is a commonly used facility with larval rearing tanks that temporarily houses collected wild fry that are not immediately sold or transported to nursery farms.
